We try to give justice to this aspect by considering different types of semiconductors for our study. These are w-ZnO from II-VI type, w-GaN from III-V type and PbTe and SnTe from IV-VI type. The magnetic part of the thesis includes the formulation of the Effective Mass Representation (EMR) in the presence of an external magnetic field. The formulation leads to the derivation of the effective mass and the effective g-factor. One of the novelties of this formulation is that Green s function is used to derive these expressions. Moreover, Green s function is not normally associated with a k and#61655; p or its relativistic variant k and#61655;and#61552; theory. In this way, our approach is different from the common practice. An exclusive chapter on the magnetization due to local magnetic moments in a diluted magnetic semiconductor, Pb1-xGdxTe is added to take care of the magnetic property in the thesis.
