Though the majority of the rural population in Odisha is unbanked and underprivileged from formal financial services because of insufficient collateral and savings, MFIs provide easy financial credit facilities to develop the economy and reduce the poverty. Insufficient access to credit and financial dependence is the main cause of poverty. The empowerment of women is the origin of changing lives at the household level and in the broader society. In this regard, the provision of microfinance is one of the approaches to empowering rural women. Microfinance plays a significant role in poverty improvement and empowerment of women. The provision of credit to the bottom of the pyramid, i.e. the poor and impoverished portion of society through SHGs, is regarded as a more sustainable win-win model. Microfinance not only aims to create jobs and alleviate poverty, but also focuses on women s empowerment. Mixed
