520__|aThe Public Distribution System (PDS) was first initiated by the British Government in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the Second World War in 1939. Subsequently it was introduced in urban and food deficit areas of the entire country. The PDS is undertaken by the government or any other public agency for distributing the essential goods and services among the people. It provides an important linkage between the producers and consumers by making available goods and services at the right place, right time, and the right price. The PDS was introduced in India with a view to ensuring the need for equal distribution of essential commodities in the country to protect the interest of the poorer section.
