While most of the critics consider time in Larkin s poetry as an external force causing changes, including death, in the lives of his protagonists, this thesis brings into light how the consciousness of time, not just as an abstract concept, enables them to realise their finitude. Time is not independent of Larkin s characters. The time comes into focus from the temporality of their existence. In dealing with death this thesis looks at how the authentic awareness of death, not as a melancholic observer, bears on the existence of Larkin s characters. Through a distinct analytical study of twenty selected poems (including an uncollected poem) from Larkin s The Less Deceived (1955), The Whitsun Weddings (1964), and High Windows (1974), the thesis explores the existential dimension of time and death as proposed by particularly Soren Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger, and Jea |
