It also acts as a repository for carbon and help to balance the anthropogenic CO2 emissions. There is only limited information on carbon stock, CO2 flux, and rate of carbon sequestration of mangrove forests in Kerala. Understanding the mechanisms of carbon cycling in the mangrove ecosystem would be significant in resolving many concerns related to the global carbon budget. The present study is an attempt to assess the role of mangrove forest in carbon sequestration and the factors affecting carbon turnover in these systems. The objectives of the study were 1. To quantify the carbon stock potential of mangrove ecosystems in Kerala. 2. To analyze the factors affecting carbon sequestration in mangrove systems. 3. To predict the carbon turn over under projected climate change scenarios in these ecosystems
