520 | __ | |aConcrete gravity dams are constructed for storing water for use of human beings for drinking purpose, irrigation purpose and generation of electricity. Hence it can be treated as the back bone of development of a country. At the same time safety of concrete gravity dam during an earthquake is a serious concern considering the quantity of water stored behind it and environmental impacts in the case of failure. Hence to ascertain that the dam structure is capable of resisting earthquake loading, a detailed investigation on the response due to seismic ground motion is carried out. The cross-sectional profile and materials properties of the dam, mechanical properties of the foundation rock, reservoir structure interaction and rock structure interaction are the factors effecting the dynamic characteristics and seismic response of the dam.
