Chronologic timing of puberty differs between boys & girls, occurring nearly 2 years earlier in girls. Hence, accurate measurement of skeletal maturity is critical to the optimal treatment timing of skeletal jaw discrepancies. Skeletal maturity can be assessed by several biologic indicators such as chronologic & dental age, increase in body height, menarche & appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, mandibular second molar & canine calcification stage, middle phalanx of third finger (MP3), hand-wrist radiograph and cervical vertebral maturation indicators. An ideal biologic indicator should be easily recorded with no additional x-ray exposure & should detect the peak in pubertal growth spurt with less ambiguity. Hand-wrist radiograph and assessment of cervical vertebral maturation stages from lateral cephalogram are highly subjective techniques to identify peak mandibular growth that not only
