520__|aAluminium (Al) is a neurotoxin. Chronic exposure to Al leads to neurodegenerative changes. Furthermore, it causes anxiety on oral administration to rodents. Bacopa monnieri (BM) is used in Ayurveda to ameliorate neurodegenerative changes. However, the potentials of BM in regulation of adult neurogenesis and its anxiolytic properties remain unexplored. This study mainly investigated the capacity of BM in adult neurogenesis and anxiolysis. Aims and objectives: We examined the various parameters such as biochemical, histological and behavioural effects of aluminium in hippocampus of Wistar rats. The hippocampus is concerned with declarative, spatial and episodic memory. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of BM on aluminium induced neurodegeneration and anxiety. We also studied the properties of adult neurogenesis, synaptic integration and reduction of tau formation caused by BM in demented rats.
