520__|aMicrofinance in India acts as a solution to eradicate poverty and bring economic equality. The self-help group model is an empathetic tool to support the rural poor especially women. There are various self help group models which act as an effective mechanism to empower women and provide gender equality. Thus the self help group is said to play a dominant role to enrich the poor and establish women into women entrepreneurs. The study is focused on self help groups in Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. The aim of the study is to understand on the sustainability of the self help groups in terms of its basic functioning, activities, relation of savings and borrowings, perception of loan disbursement and retrieval and finally the problems and prospects of self help groups. The research design adopted for the research is descriptive and primary data collection method is used. A pilot study was conducted to validate the data.
