520__|aDental caries is a very commonly observed tooth disease in mankind. Diagnosis and treatment planning for dental caries become more accurate with experience. With the advent in communication technology and computing power, it is required to bring automation and intelligence in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning. The objectives of present research are; to analyze digitally recorded Intra Oral Periapical radiographs (IOPA) for automatic determination of condition of teeth in the image, to use intelligent method for classification based on characteristics of image data in the IOPA and to use image processing techniques for determining appropriate characteristics that are embedded in IOPA. The algorithms developed in the present research work use Image Processing (IP) techniques and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) as a soft computing learning tool. Innovative segmentation algorithm, Multi point Search Algorithm for Automatic Segmentation (MSAAS) is developed during this research. This algorithm uses IP
