520__|aImmunity is the ability of multicellular organism which has adequate biological defenses to fight against infection, disease and another unwanted biological invasion. Immunity involves both nonspecific and specific components. Nonspecific components act as barriers or eliminators for a wide range of pathogens irrespective of their antigenic make-up. Other components of the immune system adapt themselves to new diseases encountered and are able to generate pathogen-specific immunity. In humans, immunodeficiency can either be the result of a genetic disease such as severe combined immunodeficiency, acquired conditions such as HIV/AIDS and the use of immunosuppressive medication. In contrast, autoimmunity results from a hyperactive immune system attacking normal tissues as if they were foreign organisms. Fungal infections caused by opportunistic pathogens such as Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus and their morality in immunocompromised patients shows a steady upward trend in the world.
