520__|aThe popularity of Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) as an attractive communication technology for many distributed applications, has risen with the advancement in the wireless technologies and the proliferation of cheaper and more powerful mobile devices. The applicability of a MANET for many military and disaster-response applications is attributed to some of its inherent characteristics like the infrastructure-less property, ease of deployment and self-organizing nature. The challenges associated with the applicability are attributed to certain other distinctive features, such as, open communication medium, resource constraints and dynamically changing topology. Specifically, the challenges crop up with respect to ensuring security, since a MANET deployed for military applications is associated with rigid performancenewlineconstraints and hostile environments in which a node may be captured by annewlineadversary and subverted. Hence the design of a security solution in a MANET is a challenging research issue.
