Process of building IndCat_Book Data

The process of building IndCat commences with the creation of bibliographic records in participating university libraries and their receipt at the INFLIBNET Centre. The steps involved in the building of IndCat database are as follows:

Step 1. INFLIBNET Centre receives bibliographic records from Indian universities in MARC or MARCXML format from different library software, such as SOUL, KOHA, Libsys, VTLS, SLIM etc.

Step 2. Checking the Data Quality as per the AACR-II Rules and LoC MARC standard. For that using MARCEdit Software and the following fields are mandatory for the book database, i.e. Title, Author, Place, Publisher, Year, Edition, ISBN, Pages, Class No., Subject, and Accession.

Step 3. Importing the MARC File converted into CSV format using UCMS 2.0 Application.

Step 4. Importing CSV file into university database using UCMS 2.0 Application and using the following steps :

  • Importing CSV file into Database;

  • Creating DD String;

  • Fetching Holding Details;

  • Checking for Duplicate Records within University; and

  • Mass Insert from Temp to Main Table.

Step 5. All records go under the process of authentication, using the Union Catalogue Management System (UCMS 2.0) Application for editing typographical errors in various fields such as place, publisher, edition, year of publication, etc.

Step 6. Lock Data before Matching and Merging.

Step 7. Matching and Merging into IndCat.

Step 8. SOLR Indexing of Merging records.
